Big Ton Springs Equipped with Lifting Lugs

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. specially designed and fabricated big ton springs equipped with side lifting lugs to support piping of a 102-megawatt, refinery cogeneration power plant in California.

Under typical circumstances, this type of job application would utilize variable spring hangers, but because of the restricted space, the hangers’ size would be too small to support a hot load of 19,068 lbs and cold load of 17,212 lbs. In order to satisfy both the required loads and space, PT&P engineers designed and fabricated figure 500 big ton springs equipped with side lifting lugs. The lifting lugs were attached to allow the big ton to suspend as a variable spring would in the field.

Custom Variables in the Field

Piping Technology & Products, Inc.  specially designed and fabricated hundreds of altered Type A variable spring hangers in order to accommodate the special travel and spring rate needed to support the furnace tubes of a hydrogen reformer in Venezuela.

In order to accommodate customer specified travel and spring rate, modified spring coils were required. With a travel of 8 7/8, the variable spring hanger casing lengths were increased from the standard size of 32 inches to over 6 feet long. The calculated spring rate is 79 lb/sq in for an operating load of 2,804 lbs. and installed load of 3,505 lbs.

The housings are coated with a heat resistant paint, which protects the spring coils from corrosion and high temperatures of the furnace area.

Big Ton Springs

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. specially designed and fabricated big ton springs equipped with side lifting lugs to support piping of a 102-megawatt, refinery co-generation power plant in California.

The big ton springs are comprised of A-36 carbon steel and built at 13″x 23″x 9-1/2″ with a downward travel of .232″. The job was completed within two days to meet the customer’s quick turn requirements.

Introducing PT&P’s Maintenance Free Slide Plates, Bronzphites®

Rods and Clevises for a Natural Gas Combined Cycle Facility

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured hundreds of hanger rods and clevises for a 1,250 MW natural gas combined cycle facility in Mississippi.

The rod and clevis components were made of various alloys (800H, F91, 316H, SA-387 Gr. 22) and ranged in sizes from 2″ to 4″ diameter. Taking into account the surrounding environment’s conditions, engineers designed the rods and clevises so that they can endure temperatures escalating to 1430º F. For the duration of a pull test conducted, the clevises and rods sustained loads up to 152,000 lbs. and there were no discrepancies.

4" Pig Launchers and Receivers for a Water Reclamation Plant

Sweco Fab, Inc. manufactured 4″ pig launchers and receivers for a water reclamation plant in Savage, Maryland.

These launchers and receivers are to aid in the utilization of an oxidation ditch activated sludge process designed for nitrification / de-nitrification and phosphorous removal. The design consists of components such as T-bolt closures, side outlet tees and 4″, 150-psi flanges with protectors. After being built to ASME, Sect. VIII, Div. 1, the launchers and receivers were shop prime painted to prevent against corrosion.

Constants For Constricted Areas of a Chemical Processing Plant

Constants For Constricted Areas of a Chemical Processing Plant
Constants For Constricted Areas of a Chemical Processing Plant

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. custom designed and fabricated 200-C type constants to suit constricted areas of a chemical processing plant in Texas.

Short distances between the pipe and the supporting beam necessitated a custom design. Two designs were needed one was for a 230 lb. load with 11″down travel, while the other was for a 260 lb. load with 13-1/2″ down travel. The PT&P standard design for these constants has Take-Out values of 19-9/16″ and 21-9/16″, respectively. However, the available space permitted no more than 9-1/2″.

Compare the final design, shown on the left to the standard design, shown on the right. Note that the lower part of the frame has been cut away, permitting the pipe to move nearer to the constants’ supporting lugs.

PT&P’s system of stock pipe and spring supports, allowed engineers and workers to fabricate these constants within a short amount of time.

Cylinder Pipe Guides

Cylinder Pipe Guides

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured cylinder pipe guides for an energy center in Canada.

These guides, which are frequently referred to as spider guides, are designed to control lateral pipe movement and maintain the alignment of the piping through its axial and contraction cycles. A single piping run uses spider guides in number to avoid a fulcrum or an imposed lateral deflection on critical components.

These spider guides were designed for pipes ranging from 1″ to 20″ diameter with 1″ to 4″ of insulation. The components include carbon steel plates, stock clamps, angles and green-primer coated pipes. The outer shields have diameters ranging of approximately 6″ to 29-1/2″ with a bottom-of-angle to center-of-pipe dimensions of 3-1/8″ to 15-3/4″. The maximum design temperature for the spider guides is 750°F.

40 Clamp Attachments for a Petrochemical Plant

The clamp attachments shown are used for supporting vertical pipe sections to vessel clip anchors. These braces are designed for a maximum horizontal moment of 15,000 ft-lb at the vessel clip. All the clamps provided were made of carbon steel with a hot-dip-galvanized finish. The pipe hanger assembly lengths were fabricated per specifications provided by the client.

The clamp components were designed and fabricated for non-standard pipe diameters (i.e. 13-3/4″, 16-1/2″) so that they could be used on insulated or finned pipelines.

The sizes of the Figure 200 constants ranged from 32 to 64, with a total travel of 4.5 to 10.5, and loads varying from 1,149 to 5,149 pounds. The constants are provided with a custom designed PT&P Figure 270, which consists of a double lug horizontal traveler versus a single lug. Within the horizontal travel, the constants are designed to handle 8 of horizontal movement and support a rod that remains vertical throughout pipe movement.

Special Vertical Type E Constant Spring Supports

April 26, 2002
Special Vertical Type E Constant Spring Supports
Special Vertical Type E Constant Spring Supports

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured special vertical type E constant spring supports for a power plant. These were designed and installed as pairs in a configuration similar to the typical G type constants. The advantage of using a pair of the special E rather than the conventional G type is that the total width is smaller as can be seen in Figure 1.

The constants were designed to support loads from 5,730 lbs to 10,690 lbs. They were fabricated from A36 Carbon steel. The dimensions of the individual constants are 60″ high, 16 1/2″ long, and 14″ in wide. The size of the supported pipe determined the width of the assembly. As with all constants built by PT&P, they were tested to verify that standard specifications for variation of load over the full range of travel were met.
