Piping Technology and Products, Inc. designed and manufactured six flexible pipe restraints for an oil refinery in Texas. These flexible pipe restraints, with the overall length ranging from 14″ to 30″, are designed to restrain movements of the piping system. They are manufactured by welding a 2 1/2″ SCH.80 galvanized casing pipe between 2×2 1/2″ flexible ball joints. Some also have a 2″ SCH. 80 pipe end welded to the swivel stem of the ball joints for length adjustments during installation.

Sweco Fab recently designed and manufactured two carbon steel sway struts with 2” adjustment capabilities for a cycle unit project. The sway strut is constructed of an 8” diameter pipe, 130 ¼” long, assembled with rod ends and brackets for an overall assembly length of 15’-0”. The 2” adjustment capability is accompanied by a load capacity up to 128 KIPS. Sway struts are used to restrain movement of piping in one direction while providing movement from thermal expansion or contraction in another direction.

Piping Technology & Products recently designed and manufactured four fig. 2100 hydraulic shock snubbers for a refinery in California. Carbon steel was used to manufacture these snubbers. They support a maximum load of 14,000 lbs., have a 3” cylinder, and 5” stroke load. This was a custom job where the customer provided the figure number, cylinder size, and stroke load; we built the snubbers according to these specifications.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. recently designed and manufactured Sway Struts, PT&P Fig. 2110, with clamps for a construction company in Indiana.
The overall length of the support assemblies range from 24” to 60” and have loads ranging from 3,500 to 11,630 lbs. The strut assemblies are made of carbon steel and are used to restrain movement of piping in one direction while providing for movement due to thermal expansion or contraction in another direction.

Piping Technology & Products recently designed and manufactured three hydraulic snubbers for a construction site in Louisiana.
These snubbers, with an operating load of 3500 lbs., are 2.5 x 6 and allow for 4 of total travel distance. The lock-up velocity test was performed on these snubbers to make sure that at high rates of loading, especially impact, the snubber would provide very high resistance to movement. And, the drag test was performed to make sure that at low speeds they provide very low resistance to movement.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. specially designed and fabricated ten sway braces, with total travel distance of 14, for a petroleum company in Louisiana.
The standard PT&P braces have springs that allow 3 of total travel distance. These sway braces were custom designed to provide total travel distance of 5 and 14. The center-to-center dimensions ranged from 92¼” to 115″ with internal supports to prevent buckling. The desired spring rates for the sway braces were 450 lb./in. and 1350 lb./in. The custom sway brace assemblies comprised of pipes (for spring housing), springs (sizes dependent on spring rate and total travel) and in some cases, ball joints.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc., recently performed its snubber cycle test to prove the durability of a MSA 35 mechanical snubber manufactured for an engineering and construction company at Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
The cyclic test, performed using PT&P’s in-house, horizontal, hydraulic press, is designed to test snubbers at their two modes of operation. At high rates of loading, especially impact, the snubber is expected to provide very high resistance to movement. At low speeds snubbers are to provide very low resistance to movement. Testing a snubber at a low speed displays the normal wear and tear over an extended period of time.
In this case, a cyclic test was performed, in which the MSA 35 Mechanical Snubber with a load rating of 50,000 pounds and design travel of 6 inches was measured at a slow speed response. The low speed force remained at a fairly constant 500 pounds for the 50 hours and 5000 cycles it sustained. This value meets the common criteria that the drag force should be 2% or less than the rated load.
In addition to the snubber cycle drag test, Piping Technology & Products, Inc. has administered other tests such as the burst test for expansion joints. The tests executed by PT&P allow companies to attain the most precise and reliable data available to them. Using this to their advantage, customers will be able to compare data about the recently ordered products, to their individual standards of dependability and durability.
Piping Technology & Products, Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiaries are recognized leaders in manufacturing pipe hangers/pipe supports (variables, constants, cryogenic supports cold shoes, hot shoes, mechanical/hydraulic snubbers, slide bearing plates), expansion joints/compensators (metallic, fabric, rubber, slip-type) and ASME Code Fabrication. PT&P has engineering drawing production stress analysis and full in-house finite element analysis that are used to prove designs. The design software is developed in-house and the calculations contrived are further checked using hand calculations.
Shown above are hydraulic snubbers which are used to protect critical components in refineries, power plants and other industrial plants from sudden movement by the attached piping system. Engineers specify these for systems subject to sudden accelerations caused by earthquakes, extreme wind loads or water hammer. Hydraulic snubbers resist sudden rapid movement of the pipe by limiting the flow rate of the fluid inside the snubber. The device is designed to slow movement, such as would be expected during thermal expansion, has practically no resistance, but sudden rapid movement is resisted with a force proportional to the velocity raised to a power, where the power is determined by the orifice valve and flow pattern in the design. Selection of materials and liquids used will depend on the environment where the snubber is installed.

The photograph above shows sway struts and mechanical snubbers, which are combined and attached to large pipes and to stable structures. The snubber will dampen shocks and vibrations caused by sudden opening and closing of valves or even earthquakes. Piping Technology & Products, Inc. fabricated these for the steam piping in a power plant.

PT&P has been developing and testing a better hydraulic snubber during recent months. Final independent tests at a university laboratory are confirming our tests.
PT&P’s new snubber design features a spring-loaded cylinder in the hydraulic reservoir which feeds the main cylinder. This design is more compact, and it allows the snubber to be mounted in any orientation. With the addition of test equipment from our recent acquisition from the Basic Engineers Auction, PT&P plans to have these snubbers in production by the end of this year.
3D Models of PT&P Spring Hangers and Hardware are now available for Intergraph’s PDS Plant Design Software.
