Structural and Bronzphite® Slide Plate Assembly for an Exhaust Duct at a Fossil-Fired Power Plant

Type: Structural Support with Slide Plates
Size: 1/2” x 5/18”
Material: Carbon Steel | Hot-dipped Galvanized | Bronzphite®
Design: 2,000 lb. Load | 730°F Temperature | 3,500 lb. Hydro-test

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. custom designed this structural support with Bronzphite® slide plates for an exhaust duct application at a fossil fuel-fired power plant in Louisiana. The Bronzphite measures 1/2” x 5″ x18” and was attached to a stand manufactured in carbon steel with a galvanized finish. The assembly is designed for an operating temperature of 730°F and an operating load of up to 2,000 lb. Also, designed with a hydro-test load of 3,500 lb. Standard visual and dimensional tests were performed prior to shipment.

Bronzphite® slide plates are commonly installed underneath the saddles of large stainless and carbon steel pressure vessels and tanks used in mining, refineries, and storage tanks storing a number of gasses such as chlorine, petroleum, and ammonia. Bronziphite plates used in these applications help to facilitate the growth of the tank due to pressure and temperature changes by lowering the friction between the supporting structural steel and the saddle of the vessel. Our Sweco division is ASME certified and can assist in the design and manufacture of small vessels and have experienced engineers utilizing materials such as Hastelloy, stainless, and carbon steel.

Bronzphite® Slide Plate Assemblies Designed for an Oil Refinery in Canada

Bronzphite® Slide Plate Assemblies Designed for an Oil Refinery in Canada

Type: Bronzphite® Slide Plate Assemblies
Size: 1/2” x 4” x 4” | 1/2” x 7-1/2” x 7-1/2”.
Design: 1100°F Operating Temperature | 5000 PSI Load
Material: HDG Carbon Steel | Bronzphite®
Testing: Visual & Dimensional Tests

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. manufactured Bronzphite® slide plate assemblies for an oil refinery in Canada. The Bronzphite® is used as the lower slide plate bearing surface and measures 1/2″ x 4″ x 4″, and the carbon steel backing plates are 1/2″ x 7-1/2″ x 7-1/2″. The upper slide plate material is polished stainless steel. Bronzphite consists of a bronze plate that utilizes graphite inserts. Bronze is used because of its hardness and load-carrying abilities. The graphite “crumbles” when the load or weight of the equipment is placed on top of the slide plate assembly. This produces a thin film of graphite which acts as an oil-free lubricant between the lower bronze slide plate and upper stainless steel slide plate. The graphite greatly reduces friction between the two surfaces. The assembly is designed for an operating temperature of up to 1100°F, with an operating load of up to 5,000 PSI. Standard visual and dimensional tests were performed prior to a two-week delivery.

10 Feet Long Graphite Slide Plates for a Plant in Alberta
10 Feet Long Graphite Slide Plates for a Plant in Alberta

The top sheet of graphite measures 1/2″ x 11 1/2″ x 115 1/2″. This particular design also includes a bottom sheet of graphite with the same dimensions, but only 1/4″ thick. Each individual graphite sheet is bonded to a hot dipped galvanized backing plate with a 1/2″ lip all around for full welding. In an application where the pipe has large amount of movement due to thermal expansion, slide plates can be utilized to eliminate friction between the pipe support and the supporting member. Graphite is used when the slide plate must function at high temperatures. These particular graphite slide plates are designed for 1000ºF.
