PT&P designed a constant load support system for a fluid tank with a load of 105,000 lb. over an area of 5′ W x 20′ L. To prevent twisting of the fluid container, the support system is designed to allow for “level” vertical movement. This was achieved by using a special system composed of three U-Type constant units. Each unit employs two springs working in parallel with a common large base plate and a load flange to support the entire 5′ width of the container.

The constants will support loads of 39,000 lb., 36,000 lb., and 30,000 lb., with a total travel of 4″ in the “upwards” direction. The spring coils were coated in neoprene, and all the other major components were hot dip galvanized to inhibit corrosion. These constants were constructed primarily from carbon steel with the use of stainless steel and PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates.

Each constant spring support is designed to carry a 27,200 lb. load and provide 13″ downward travel. Special spring coils are used in order to reduce the entire length of the pipe hanger assembly. The frame and all internal moving components’ geometry are optimized as well to reduce the overall size. In total, the frame and casing combination measure 78″L x 21½”W x 33¾”H. The customer requested frame modification for special lug locations.

The smaller model has an operating load of 12,100 lb. and a design travel of .443″ up. The big tons will be utilized to support substantial vertical loads while simultaneously providing a large platform to accommodate axial movement of the piping system across the load flange. Low friction rollers are installed to reduce the sliding friction between the load flange and the bottom section of a pipe shoe.

PT&P designed and fabricated F-type variables for an oil refinery in California. The variable springs are designed for an operating load of 49,771 lb. and an installed load of 43,000 lb. Two coils are used in tandem to achieve a vertical movement of 1-5/8″ downward. The variables are fabricated from hot-dipped galvanized carbon steel and are customized with an extended load column to reach an installed height of 67-1/2″. The variables for this project are the largest standard double springs offered; however, PT&P can customize to any load specification. Standard load testing was performed prior to shipment.

Constant Spring Assemblies Custom Designed for Replacement of Failed Supports

Failed Constants

This initial order included PT&P’s field services division testing and recalibrating four constant spring supports not manufactured by PT&P. A preliminary inspection of the original constants revealed deformations in the spring coil housing. This is indicative of defective coils; therefore, before any load tests were conducted, inspection windows were cut into the spring coil cover to confirm the initial hypothesis (Figure 2). Inspection of the coils revealed complete deterioration with broken and missing sections of the spring. Subsequent inspections of the remaining three assemblies illustrated similar failures. The original constants were then disassembled (Figure 3) to determine the feasibility of replacing only the coils while utilizing the original frame/cam components.

The original spring coils were different in spring rate, length, and diameter than any standard PT&P coils; therefore, multiple coils were required to duplicate the overall function of the existing coils. Using multiple coils also required modifications to the existing frames. In an effort to expedite the overall delivery schedule, entirely new constant springs were manufactured in one week (Figure 1). The four new constants measure 53″ long, 13″ wide and 86″ tall. They have a 18-3/4″ diameter spring coil with a coil housing of 20-1/2″ diameter. The new constant assemblies are designed for an operating load of 13,332 lb., travel of 13″ upward and 2″ downward for a combined total travel of 15″. A load test throughout the total travel range was performed on each constant.

F-Type Variable Springs with Fully Adjustable Travel Stops
F-Type Variable Springs with Fully Adjustable Travel Stops

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. manufactured a variety of F-type variable springs with loads ranging from 526 lb. to 33723 lb. These variable springs are fabricated from a combination of carbon steel and A193-B7 CroMoly steel with A304 stainless steel slide plates. The variable springs are modified to include fully adjustable travel stops. The first purpose of the adjustable travel stops is to aid by distributing the load evenly during the installation process. The second purpose is to allow spring adjustment to any load within the operating range.

This constant utilizes sealed cam follower roller bearings in place of slide plates that are generally used between the moving table and stationary frame. The rollers help to reduce the friction on the table, reduce residual loads which improve constant deviation, and help to restrict table movement in horizontal directions. These U-Type constants are fabricated from A36 carbon steel with dimensions of 28″H x 37″L x 17″W. The boxing, bolting patterns and loading table location are custom designed per customer specifications. The design also includes a graphite plate bonded to the top of the load flange to reduce the friction between the constant load flange and the saddle support above it. The supports are designed to carry 3015 lb. of piping load with an upward travel of 6″. The constants underwent standard load and travel testing before being shipped to an energy plant.

C-Type Constant with Special Lugs
C-Type Constant with Special Lugs

This PT&P 100 C-Type constant spring support was designed in conjunction with special lugs to fit inside of a trolley. The lugs will provide for movement up and down, as well as extensive horizontal movement. This constant was fabricated entirely from A-36 carbon steel with a hot-dipped galvanize finish. The constant measures 16″ wide x 25″ long x 56″ high. It is designed to carry 16,164 lb. of piping load with a travel of 3 1/2″ downward. The lugs will fit within a trolley by a single pin connection. This configuration will prevent swinging by maintaining the constant in an upright position, which will ensure proper functionality and eliminate any load deviation.

These custom designed constants will be utilized for a heavy load of 109,000 lb. They are designed for a downward travel of 1 1/2″. In order to support the heavy load and low take-off, the constants are designed with an inner and outer spring coil with the outer coil measuring 56″L with a 18 3/4″ O.D. These U-Type constants are fabricated from A36 carbon steel with a hot-dipped galvanize finish.

The dimensions of the constant are 31″H x 90″L x 32″W. The image above shows a PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plate on top to reduce the friction between the constant load flange and the structure above the support. The constant also includes slide plates between the table and the frame of the constant to reduce the friction on the table and improve constant deviation.
